erin, you heard ed, that president obama lost the debate but now the excuses are rolling in. al gore says, no, no, no, he lost because of the altitude in denver, 5,000', and the obama campaign saying it is because mitt romney wasn't honest. they are having a tough time trying to spin out of this. >>guest: they are. another thing that we heard david axelrod say this morning is that the president didn't want to have two candidates on stage insulting each other. that was part of the reasoning for why he didn't bring up bain capital or romney's tax returns or the 47 percent video. >>trace: "politico" had a quote that said there was no knockout punch but a thousand cuts that made obama plead. the question everyone is asking, how much did he bleed. how much did it cost? >>guest: it is hard to say because it will take a long-term, not a long-term, up to a week to she in the presidents. we don't know yet what it will look like in the battleground states. the obama campaign is moving very quickly to make that trust argument against mitt romney through some of their surrogates in state

both of talented debaters. obama has some advantages. he's debated in the general election stage before. romney has the advantage of having simply debated more over the last year. so i think it's kind of an even stage there, but the situation is not comparable to reagan versus carter. the economic metrics when carter was running for re- election were extremely negative, much more negative than they are today, and just this last week, polls show that the pub has more confidence in the president's economic views and vision and program than romney. so he has lost the one advantage that he once had. secondly, there were a lot of independent, undecided voters in 1980 who had lost faith in carter and were just waiting to see if they could feel confidence in his challenger. there are so few independent voters. this is an election that's about mobilizing the bases. so going after the independent voter is not a big surprise. having said all that in the memo put out by david axelrod -- >> who is who? >> he's the campaign guru on the obama side. >>

but president obama plans to take the debates seriously. continue the conversation that he had with the american people during his convention speech and talk about the specifics about moving our economy and our country forward. like his plan to increase manufacturing jobs by one million, like his plan to cut oil imports in half in ten years, and his plan to make sure we continue to fight for the middle class and working families. >> but all were promises he made in the first term. is it fair to say the president's second term promise is, i'm continuing everything in the first term? does he owe the american public who seems to have some yearning for some change, and we can have a debate about how much change they want but they want something to chapg. they want the tone in washington to change. what does president obama owe them credibly on what change he'll bring in a second term? >> well, we have already brought a considerable amount of change. president obama inherited the largest set of problems of any president since fdr. in the last si

a couple of days before the debate, embracing he was the godfather of obama care. the larger issue is, with mitt romney coming out and saying, i was wrong, does that help him reset his campaign? >> no. >> you say -- >> i say no because he's looking more and more like a shape shifter, which is precisely the stereotype that people have somehow in their minds held about him, including people on the right. you don't know who the real mitt romney is. by doing this it's like he's inflicting 1,000 cuts on himself. this constant movement and bobs and weaving doesn't help him recover when it comes to likability and trustability. >> anne let met get you in. in virginia governor romney was with congressman ryan there. they had the fireworks, and it actually reminlded me of when the republicans would criticize the democrats for having those pillars remember at the last democratic national convention. quite a beautiful sight, but even chuck todd and our first read team noted that image alone could look like you still have a few more debates to go. >> well, i think that's right.
